Review: Spyderco C177GP ROC cleaver copy from Aliexpress

Spyderco C177GP ROC cleaver copy
Excellent budget pocket cleaver

Pros:
- good ergonomics with excellent fit and finish
- smooth opening and closing
- perfectly centered blade with a nice satin finish
- awesome cleaver style blade shape
- solid, early lock-up without any blade play
- comfortable handle design with a reversible wire pocket clip
- very good price / value

Cons:
- the edges of the steel liners and the liner-lock should have been rounded a bit
It's about 5 min work with a 400 grit sand paper and it's fixed.

Closed length:      4.72" (120 mm)
Handle thickness: 0.51" (13 mm)

You can buy the Spyderco ROC copy in black or orange on Aliexpress: ***HERE***

Because of a stupid rule of Aliexpress the sellers are forced to photoshop

the locking mechanism at the folders and the "blood grooves" / holes on the blade.

  1. I got mine from fasttech as it's cheaper there (https://www.fasttech.com/p/9384204) and I agree with you on the liners.
I also wish that the detente ball would sit a bit higher so I wouldn't have to push the blade a bit when disengaging the lock for the blade to close, but once I'm pass the detente, the blade closes smoothly.
Overall, I think it's an interesting design and I like it.

  2. It's a nice design for sure. One thing what I missed was a finger choil so I couldn't resist the urge and I modded my ROC. I also rounded the liners and the corner of the liner-lock.

  3. I guess Fasttech no longer sells these? (links go to a cheap knife)

    1. I can't find them either. They stopped selling these so I removed the obsolete links. Thanks for letting me know!

    2. Yeah, it looks like a couple of weeks ago, FT has removed most of the Spyderco clones they had , or at least all the ones that has the Spyderco Logos and markings on the knife. Maybe they have been flagged and threatened???

    3. I guess for the same reason we can't see spydie holes on AE either.

By the way have you received your titanium fluted Native?

  4. Yes I have and it's beautiful.
Mine came with a spring tension that is pretty good actually, I didn't feel the need to mess with it.
I was a bit disappointed to see it come brand new from the box with a couple of scratches on the blade though, but what can I do.
I'm not too fond of the fake markings on the blade neither, I would have preferred a sterile blade with only the actual steel on it (which is still a mystery) just like on the Techno.
Other than that, I really like it.

    1. It's a very attractive folder for sure. Is the detent strong enough at yours?

Did you manage to check your Techno for bearings by any chance?
      Mine runs on washers.

  5. I'd say the detente is adequate.
I can't flick it open (like most back locks) but can roll it out smoothly without trouble.
No, I haven't open the Techno yet. I guess mine will probably be on washers to, it just looked like bearings from the outside. If it is not loctite to hell, maybe I'll open it tonight and confirm.

    1. Yep, my Techno from Fasttech is on bearings.
I was actually a bit disappointed to see that there is no steel washers in between the bearings and the Ti scales.

    2. You can't complain for that price! :))
I also took apart mine and as I said it had bronze washers. It must be an earlier version. The only visual difference I can see between the two versions is the pivot screw. Mine has an oval-head screw while the Fasttech version comes with a flat-head pivot screw.

    3. Definitely not complaining for the price, especially since I got it during one of their 15% off sale ;) but it would have been a nice touch.

  6. Thanks Isti, I'll order one from AE. BTW I learned of the ROC clone from your photo of it back in December on the BLF thread "What blade did you EDC today?"

    1. It's a decent folder for the money. Although I couldn't resist and I modded my black one. :) I added a kind of finger choil by removing the front part of the handle.

  7. Hi Isti, sorry to comment on the old post. Is this Spyderco ROC clone still available anywhere you know? I really want to get my hands on one. Are you willing to sell, if you have any unused or unwanted unit? I am willing to pay for the international shipping, assuming you are not in the US. I am grateful to know of your blog. Thanks

  8. Wow, that would be awesome! I really appreciate that. I know it's a long shot, but I just thought I would ask. Much gratitude bro! I figured out how to put a username so you are not relying to some random anon.
