New "Tough Guy" heavy duty folders on Aliexpress

(Seller's pics)
Five variations to choose from:

Here's my regular version:

You can buy the Tough Guy - RAD Field Cleaver copy on Aliexpress:
!!UPDATED LINK!!

The XL version with 4.72" (120mm) long 0.24" (6mm) thick blade is not available anymore.

Because of a stupid rule of Aliexpress the sellers are forced to photoshop the locking mechanism on the folders. So don't worry these folders come with solid frame-locks!
Have a look at the pics:

  1. This is looking like a cool original (?) design.
The one with the hole in the blade is just asking to get the flipper ground off for legal carry in countries like Germany :)

    1. I was wondering why they put that hole to the front of the blade. :)

    2. It reminds me of the Spyderco Roadie even though that knife follows a very different approach...

Does anyone of you know about any higher quality original design knives on aliexpress? Only one That I know about is Venom Attacker (already ordered one).

    1. Thanks for the link! :)

The MG Shuttle seems like an original design or this Scorpions which is heavily inspired by CKF's products.

    2. Not sure about any of the following, but worth a look:
      # the "Piston" (flipper with detached flipper tab)
      # several offerings marked as "TwoSun" with model numbers looking like TS... and two digits, e.g. TS20 (or TS-20) -- can't tell anything about quality, though
      # several offerings under the CH brand (like the one with the skull)

If it's just about Chinese knives (usually not on ali), then there is
      # Kizer
      # Stedemon
      # Rike (or is it Rikeknife?)
      # ColdSteel (said to be the higher end brand of whoever makes Sanrenmu (might just be a rumour); some products might be inspired by others)
... and lots more ranging from higher end budget level (say, 50...100something €) to rather solid 3-digit-prices

    3. The Piston is very inspired (not a clone but still) by the CKF Sukhoi.

I have one two sun, not impressed at all with the quality (might be specific to this model).

Other than that, yes, Kizer, Stedemon, Rike or Reate are good level original Chinese brands. For the most they're almost mid-tech in quality for the price of a serious industrial... Almost everything they offer is in the 150 to 350$ range.

ColdSteel, to the best of my knowledge is a 100% US company producing a large part of their offering overseas. And not related in any way, shape of form with Sanrenmu (except that the latter does sometimes "inspire" itself from some Coldsteel models.

    4. The mg shuttle is not an original design, is not a 100% clone but very strongly inspired of a gavko mako. Video on the mg shuttle here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueg1tkRyKeU

  4. So my "tough guy" shipped this night (according to the seller... might only be pre-advising the parcel).
Let's see when it arrives, I was always rather attracted by those various "cleaver folders", but most are customs with a looooong wait time.

  5. I have never understood these cleaver type folders. I can see that these have some kind of primitive attraction but I just don't see them as practical

    1. I made a mistake and watched a couple of videos about the originals on Youtube and I ended up ordering it. It doesn't seem practical to me either so it must be the primitive attraction! :)

  6. I have been eyeballing otf knives for several years now. Never bought one hence the practicality aspect. Same thing for balisongs and carambits.. they don't fit my needs. I don't like the idea about a knife made primarily for harming/self defence. Over here if you use a knife for self defence purposes, then YOU are in serious trouble with the law. The primary aggressor will have less trouble with the law than the victim.

  7. Still, they are very practical, particularly if the blade has at least a bit of curvature. The larger/heavier blade allows for some "chopping action" that is very very useful when carving wood, cutting meat or even cutting some ropes.
Now, I'd be lying if I'd pretend that's the only reason I ordered one. Sure, the "primitive attraction" plays a big role too!

  8. I don'the see chopping as a practical chore for a folder. I carry an edc for small tasks. Sure it's a good thing that the folder is sturdy so it won't let you down in a pinch. Chopping or batoning is better done by an axe or a fixed blade. So if you go into the woods, take a fixed blade.

  9. Received mine today... was very fast once in France, for a change! It's a wicked piece of equipment, sharp, quite well finished and smooth! Only "negative" is the box not quite up were I though it'd be. Still, better than most cardboard boxes.
Went straight to my pocket, replacing the Blur instantly!

  10. It sounds great! Which version did you go for?
Mine has arrived too but at the moment I'm on vacation so I'll grab it next week.

  11. I got the "plain handle, stonewashed blade, with hole in blade" version.
And you, which one did you choose?

  14. Mine has just been (temporarily) kicked out of my pocket by the arrival of the ZT 0452 CF... Way lighter and still boasting a longer blade. But not as mean looking, for sure.

  15. I look forward to grabbing mine tomorrow evening!

I really like the mirror polished then stone washed blade finish.

  16. And here's my review... I'm like you when it comes to the blade finish, a very nice stonewash, indeed!

  17. I've been wanting either one of those since I first saw them but couldn't afford the price tag.
Then I came across this yesterday:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/John-OEM-Chaves-Custom-Large-ball-bearing-Folding-Knife-D2-Titanium-Camping-Hunting-Survival-Knives-Outdoor/32775435217.html?spm=2114.13010308.0.0.DfJTNv

Ordered one and it dispatched today.
It's the full size so I don't really expect it to be EDCable but tbh, I just wanted a cleaver. At least I'll be ready for zombie apocalypse LOL!

    1. According to Ben (Dicoria) the real blade length of the XL version is 120mm (4.72"). I wouldn't go for swimming with that for sure. :)
I have the regular version with a 90mm blade and that size is quite managable and edc friendly.

      Delete
    2. Ah ah, so even bigger than the description, that will be interesting LOL!
I got the email from Dicoria but didn't see him selling this one in his store, I though he was advertising for a friend of his or something.
So is John Knives Factory Shop the same shop as Dicoria?

      Delete
    3. I see it now on Ben's shop but the description still says 98mm blade.

    4. Ben (Dicoria) has atleast 3 shops on AE. I'm not sure about John Knives Factory Shop.

Aliexpress doesn't allow listing knives/folders with blade length over 100 mm that's why you can see 98 mm blade length in descriptions even at large folders. It's the same case with locks, blood grooves, OTFs and switchblades.
I asked Ben about the real blade length in a private message.

  18. Oh OK, I knew about the lock but didn't about blade length.
    Thanks for clarifying.

  19. I got one and took it apart and found it had all the parts you laid out plus a metal washer/spacer on the frame lock side of the pivot screw next to its ball bearing, did yours not have this? Think my knife would be fine taking it out? Dont understand why it would be there just for one side, any ideas?

    1. I haven't taken mine apart yet (those pics with the black background were provided by the sellers). It's interesting because they equip similar titanium folders with ball bearings with 2 steel washers or none.
