Because of a stupid rule of Aliexpress the sellers are forced to photoshop the locking mechanism on the folders. So don't worry these folders come with solid frame-locks!

    1. There's a chance you'll be the first guy with a stone washed version! :))

If I were the designer of these mini Tabargans I would use the thumb studs as stop pins. The handle shape is begging for that and even though they used a separate stop pin.

  2. That Wasp is looking really great. With my S hands it would be hard to resist if they'd make a small version with hollowed handles.
Knives are users for me so it's a pity that I'm so satisfied with my Vespa Neon, can't justify to buy a small Tabargan or that Spyderco Native atm (which is looking cool on the edited pics, like a UK legal slipjoint) :P

    1. You've found your grail folder, your quest is over.
      Another lucky fellow. :)))

    2. The Wasp reminds me to the CKF Sukhoi but with a flipper.

    3. Hmm, I thinck I'd buy more knives if I could justify it to myself.
That nearly polished look on the Tabargan is really intriguing and the price is very tempting as well.
But what color should I choose? (I don't feel ready to make scales for an Axis lock knife...)

      Delete
    4. I suppose the slots for the omega springs could be carved with a Dremel on the inward sides of the scales. They don't have to be nice on that side.

    5. WASP VS Sukhoi
The WASP design shares many shapes with the Sukhoi

      Delete
    6. Well, I did some milling already and it would be definitely easier than trying to make scales for the Kershaw OD-2.

I'll try to get a book about knife mechanisms from the US for a reasonable price but I guess the next blade will be the mini Tabargan (anyone has a clue if that T-word means anything?)

    9. I could not resist as I have the Sukhoi & Piston ... and still like the lines of this knife ... not on my list (yet)

I am still waiting for a nice Sabloy version to show up ;)

    10. Do you mean Sablya? ;)

Have you seen the new Shirogorov RFT?
A $60 version of it would be an instant buy for me! :)

    11. beautiful lines on that knife .. $60, and it's a buy :)

  3. I like the softer lines of the handle scales of the Mini Tarbagan and that the liners aren't exposed as in the larger Tarbagan, but I wish it were a flipper. Also, the way the scales are attached with two small screws doesn't inspire confidence. The BEL flipper is a cunning looking design, but I can't find any info on the the brand name BEL. Any help?

    1. Yes, I know Aliexpress sells the BEL, but I'd like to know something about the designer and manufacturer, etc..

  4. Damn ... those are some nice-looking knives there.

I've been thinking about a smaller folder -- say, 75mm or so -- that won't look odd in an office environment, and considering a small Sebbie clone. But that Native--

A bit more than I'd thought to spend (on the "could I lose that much with only slight regret" metric), but ... seriously tempted here.

  5. The bel could be tempting... The wasp talks to me, but I have the piston which shares a lot with it. The fluted titanium native looks great (mine is in the mail... I hope to get it soon... and that it'll be delivered faster than the ZT0095)

    1. I also have a fluted titanium native in the mail. :)

    2. I hope this Native really does have S35VN blade steel. My lightweight Native 5 does, and it's a superlative steel.

  6. I'll be very interested to see what you guys think of the Native.

Is the lock supposed to be special somehow? Looks like a normal back-lock in photos.

    1. I have the inexpensive G10 version which is also a good performer. Be prepared it's a big handfull folder! :)

You might be intersted in this new beauty too. ;) Ben calls it as "Scorpions". The blade style reminds me to the Asymmetric.

      Delete
    2. Yep, I've seen it. It's very much like the CKF Rabit meets with the Asymmetric. However, the milling on the handle isn't really my cup of tea.
As for the size of the ZT, no problem, I like them big and almost never wear a suit, so size and weight are never really preventing me EDCing any blade.
But I'm still waiting on the native, and have the Bel in the mail... Plus I'm copiously enjoying going back and forth between the Asymmetric and the 0095. So I'll probably wait a bit on it.

    3. I fell...
So now, I'm waiting for the Native, the Bel AND the ZT0452CF... ;)
      Soooooooooooo weaaaaaaaaaaaaaak!

    4. Congratulations to your new ZT! :) It's quite tempting for me too but I already have the Native and the Techno in the mail.

      Delete
    5. hey, hey... I was on the verge, for the techno. Then you came along and tempted me with that CF and ball bearings!
I'll certainly end up buying one, but that could be in a long time as every time I feel like I will fall, a new hard-to-pass new blade comes along!

Buying the Techno was an easy excuse for me since I don't own an Albatros! :)
You can grab one for $42.99 HERE.

      Hans:
      We are all frail! :)))
That small Ti keychain flipper is on my wish list for a while. The only thing which keeps me away is the none-locking design. So I grabbed a mini Sebenza keychain folder instead of it which comes with a frame lock! :)

Since one of the buyers confirmed that blade hardness is 61.5 HRC I've been very tempted to order the CF version of the LionSteel TRE.

    8. That little damascus keychain knife is on my radar as well but where Isti is missing a lock I'd like to have a tip-down (!) clip on it to use it as a keychain dangler.
@Isti Do you have a link for that keychain Sebenza? Not that I could afford one but I'd really like to see that. The Sebenza flipper was cool already, I'd love to see Mr Reeve's face when he sees that. Afaik he doesn't really like flippers and copies in general :P

    9. Unfortunately it's no longer available.

    10. I really like the damascus etched version of that small Sebenza.
It's still available btw as the Tekut Lizard with a thick coating.
I had the idea to remove it someday but the edge retention is so low that it's not worth it :P

  9. I received my Native this morning. This is really a neat piece of "pocket jewellery" : small, elegant, very well put together (the backspacer/scales/lock back all align very very precisely). Very sharp, too.

The only negative (which really isn't that important for a knife of this style), the mechanism is quite firm and that makes the whole piece more of a two hands opener than an easy flick...

I'll certainly do a review soon as it's a recently released piece.

And I also received, at the same time, the Brother 1601, which is nice, big, in your face, but nowhere near as well put together and finished that the Native. Still a nice knife, smooth and that fills the hand well.

    Spydie day, today!

    1. I also heard that this Native is quite tight for opening. Maybe the back spring is too strong?

When mine arrives I'll take it apart to adjust it somehow.

      Delete
    2. Yep, might be a spring tension problem... But I don't really want to take it apart and see if I can adjust anything. The scales and backspacer align so perfectly that, if it weren't for the difference in colour between steel and titanium, you might think it's a single metal piece.
Not being sure that I'll be able to get it back to such perfection, I prefer tackling the "hard to open" problem to taking that risk... ;)

    3. I'm curious whether you have a sense of what the blade steel actually is -- S35VN? or ...?

It sounds like a _very_ nice knife. Looking forward to your review.

    4. I got my Brother 1601 today. For under 19$ it seems to be a good knife. Fits in my hand really well. No blade play. F&F is not flawless.. Backspacer does not sit flush with the handle on the other side. Not perfectly centered and opening is a bit stiff. Came sharp

This is just out-of-the-box condition. Gonna open it up and tweak it a bit. Cleaning and oiling. Hope to get it in a better condition

      Delete
    5. It needs some break in time.
I adjusted the pivot screw and oiled the pivot are and the blade tang (where the ball lock contacts) which helped a lot.

      Delete
    6. Oiled everything too, including the tang too. Adjusting the centering seems to be tricky. Can get it centered but then it has blade play. When I eliminate blade play, then it's way too stiff to open. Need to check it again. Only sacrificed 10 minutes to maintenance.

I sanded the stupid back spacer text off. Looks a whole lot betten now :)

  10. Does anybody know which knife model is shown on the banner of the "Fule knives International Ltd." Ali shop site (http://aliexpress.com/store/1502428), text "Fule Kevin Making, Comming soon" written it.

  11. Isti, have you seen/own a knife called CH 3504? Just ordered one. Franz has a review about it. Possibly a super bargain!

    1. I have the S35VN version. It's a pleasent folder with good ergonomics although the skull pattern is a bit too blingy for my taste.

      Delete
    2. Franzes colouring of the CH 3504 was really awesome! I actually don't know if I'm getting the greenish or blueish version.. Seems like the seller have both colors on pictures. I asked for the blue/purple version though.

How heavy is Istis CH? Any flaws on it? Franz had 160 grams and perfect as I recall.

      Delete
    3. Mine weights 149g. It arrived with a slightly deformed "wheel" pattern on the pivot screw. The rest is perfect.

      Delete
  12. I ordered the s35vn version too. You have not reviewed it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To the best of my knowledge, he didn't. We discussed the difference between our two versions (the colour and the weight are different, it seems), but I don't think I remember Isti publishing anything on his...

    2. I have the greenish color version. Franz is right I haven't reviewed it yet.

  13. And today I've written my review of the Native clone, and received two nice new knives: the Bel flipper (it's nice but maybe a tad too small for my hands and more important an bit thick -big liner and big g10 slabs, but overall it seems quite nice) and the Massdrop exclusive Kershaw Blur with dark blue body and black wash S30v blade... Which has immediately joined my pocket!

    1. Your Native looks really nice especially the back of the handle. Mine is still in transit somewhere.

How easy is to flip the Bel open? Does it have a solid lock-up?

That exclusive Blur looks awsome with the black acid washed blade, congratulations! Was it pricey?

      Delete
    2. I hope you'll get your Native soon and that it'll be as good as mine!

The Bel flips reasonably well, very well even, but not as well as it could given its smoothness, because the detent is on the weak side (not so weak that you can shake it open, though) and there a bit of friction still (I guess the detent ball on the surface of the blade). The grinds and satin on the blade are really superb... Lock-up is splendid: thick liners and engagement is about full (all of the liner presses on the blade).

As for the Blur, no it wasn't very pricey, 67$ shipping included!
